HomeScope Tutorials -- Insteon Configurer
Linking Insteon Devices Return To Index

The HomeScope Link Building process is a one-stop operation that sets up the entire Insteon network to meet the requirements defined during the editing process.  It can be run immediately following editing, or at any time thereafter if settings have been lost for any reason.  It can be run to just update Devices to which editing changes have been applied, or to rebuild the entire network from scratch.  In either case, once the rebuild is started, it will continue without the need for any further user actions.

The process begins by analyzing the results from all of the editing steps taken.  From these results, the system compiles a list of all steps that need to be taken to set up the network in the required configuration, and the order in which these steps should be performed.  This step will take a minute or two and the user will then be provided with an estimate of the total time required for the rebuild, and will be asked to confirm that the Link Building process should proceed.

The Link Building process displays a list of all Devices and then follows a series of steps to build the configuration.  The process can be followed by viewing which Device is highlighted, and the color of the highlighting:

Checking Devices

Ping Device

Device Not Found

Set required Local On Level

Set required Local Ramp Rate

Erase Device X10 Address(es) -- Optional

Building PLM/PLC Records

Writing Link to Device in PLM/PLC

Building Links

Writing required Records to Device

Clearing unwanted Records in Device

When the process is complete, a report of the rebuild process will be displayed and the user will be given the option to save a copy of the report.  If the user does not respond within 30 minutes, the report will be automatically saved and the system will continue to the Task Display screen.  (Reports are saved with a name of the form Linking_Report_yymmdd_hhmm.txt in the Reports subfolder in the current Application Folder).

Note that some settings may require power to be temporarily removed from the Insteon devices before they will take effect.  This may hold for setting of Local On Level, Local Ramp Rate and X10 Addresses.

(Erasing X10 addresses is optional.  To invoke the option, add a line "ClearX10Addresses=True" to the HomeScope.ini file in the Application Folder).
